After finishing Saga Book One, I sat back and began to think. I closed my eyes and I concentrated so that I could see my life-time of comic book reading flash before me. After about 2.5 seconds it was confirmed. I never had experienced anything like Saga before. It’s beautiful, majestic, epic, and it is also a life-changing experience. I cried, oh how I cried at so many parts. And I laughed, oh how I laughed and jumped for joy, even clapping my hands from time to time. I also felt my heart jump out of my chest watching my hand tremble as I brought up the courage to turn the page. Dare I say it’s perfect?
I’m not going to bore you with a synopsis of Saga because you really need to experience it for yourself. I had no previous interaction or knowledge of what lay between these two covers other than it is a talked about series. What I will tell you are two things. The first are the creators. Brian K. Vaughan tells a tale as old of time and creates magic with his words. Fiona Staples is incredible, her character design and ability to put the camera in places in order to extract the maximum amount of impact is incredible to experience. She’s a master because she makes everything just feel so seamless. It’s an incredible, tangible world that you will dream about. And Fonographiks ties everything together with an incredible design.
The second is that Saga is graphic in all senses of the word. One might say it even pushes boundaries and might make certain demographics feel very uncomfortable. But this is life folks and Saga uses the entire spectrum of what ‘graphic’ may be with a purpose. Yes comics are escapism and Saga can also be just that. But it also tells you something and it will resonate with anyone, regardless of which side you happen to sit next to the podium. It’s that powerful.
I could just rant and shout and express my heartfelt love for this book at you and after a period of time this all might just end up getting a bit weird. I could also state that this is comic book art in its highest, purest form but luckily there is no high or low form of comic book art. But Saga is incredible and I really do believe it should be experienced by anyone who loves this fabulous medium. Okay I will stop. But my God…
