I’m well in the middle of the final draft of Season Two of Solicitations. It’s been a lot of fun to write and I can’t wait to start working on completing some of the interiors and character designs. It’s going to be a blast.
In other news I did a nice Superboy piece. Superboy is running in the current issues of Action Comics. Written by Mark Waid he’s taking bits of pieces for Superboy’s rich history and incorporating them in a lot of themes that are relevant today. Waid is a great writer and he has such a mastery of the DC Universe. So it’s no surprise that it’s great. But also the real hero of this is Skylar Patridge. She’s the artist and her design of Superboy is really top notch as well as everything she’s doing with that world. I tried to do her Superboy justice (as seen below) but failed of course. Still, her art is very inspiring and I can’t wait to see what she will do next with my favorite character. She’s definitely becoming one of my favorite artists.

This one was interesting for me to do because I did a few corrections when I hit the inking stage to correct perspective and anatomy. I’m really into using colored pencils at the moment and I feel they fit my style and flow better than other things like markers. Markers are just too bold and final and it’s hard for me to select a good range to incorporate light and dark. Dark always ends up being too dark. With colored pencils I can easily use light and heavy strokes to hit those mid-tones and darks quite easily. I’m willing to bet, however, that colored pencils don’t show up very well when scanned and incorporated in a real comic book. I know in 2000ad there were a few artists that incorporated pastels and colored pencils (I think) in the 90’s. I don’t know if that look is good for the world of Mega-City One. It definitely works for Superboy!
That’s it for now.
Look up!
