This week was quite busy. It was one of those weeks that you feel like you did a lot but then you also feel like you did absolutely nothing. But that’s how the cookie crumbles sometimes.
I did manage to post two pieces. First up is Green Lantern. One of my ‘reading projects’ (it sounds like work when I say it like that) is going through the whole DC line starting from the big crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. Right now I just finished the Death of Superman so I’m heading right toward Zero Hour. I am now reading all of the other non-Superman stuff. One of the things I’ve been gritting my teeth to get through is Green Lantern, before his big event when Hal Jordan does something crazy and Kyle Rayner becomes the new Green Lantern. I still don’t know how or why it happened so I am looking forward to that. But all the stuff that came before is a mess and it’s not very good other than a story here and there in the Green Lantern Quarterly books. Also the thing is now rife with controversy because the writer ended up being thrown in jail for pedophilia. And I can honestly say that everything he did was not very interesting at all and there are even some moments that make you cringe after knowing the above tidbit. Nevertheless, I really like Hal Jordan so that’s the reason for the piece. And it’s in color! I still need to work on my coloring but like perspective, I’m still trying to wrap my head around color theory.

Next up is something definitely close to my heart and that’s L.E.G.I.O.N. I think if there was one series I would point to as being probably the best series coming out of Crisis it would be L.E.G.I.O.N. I don’t want to do a disservice by summarizing it here, but in a nut shell it’s a space-opera and also somewhat of a prequel to the Legion of Super-Heroes. And because Alant Grant launches it and stays on for quite a few issues along with fellow Brit Barry Kitson, I would say L.E.G.I.O.N is America’s 2000ad. Yes I said it. So acting in the guise of Franka, I gave it a recommendation over on expatNerd and drew a little depiction of Lobo and Bek wanting to kill Vril Dox. Because if you read the series you know everyone—probably also including the reader—wants to kill Vril Dox.

One way I start ramping up the fall is that I buy a bunch of scary movies to prepare for Halloween. I got wind of something called the Hammer Films and my god these our awesome. I started with The Curse of Frankenstein with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing and I have to say it is probably vast superior than the Karloff films. These Hammer productions were obviously done on a budget, but the directing, cinematography, writing, and acting are so good that you really get sucked up into that world. I’m surprised I haven’t heard of them before but if you also haven’t, I can heartily recommend them.
And that’s it for this week! This one was a bit rushed because I completely forgot to do it this afternoon but at least I got something down for Thursday.
